Shopify
Shopify overview: customer events, Custom Pixels and the boundaries of the official Google & YouTube app.
Boundaries (read first)#
- Since 2025 Shopify removed the ability to paste third-party tags in custom HTML/Scripts; third-party pixels must use Custom Pixels (sandboxed execution)
- Google explicitly does not recommend running GTM / Google tags inside the Custom Pixel sandbox (events can be delayed or dropped, and it is unsupported)
- The sandbox cannot access the page DOM: scroll depth, file downloads, outbound clicks, affiliate detection and DOM-based form submission are unavailable in a pure Custom Pixel setup
Note: So the collection scope on Shopify differs from WordPress: ecommerce events work, DOM-based events do not. See the Shopify GTM guide for the full comparison.
Recommended path#
- Install Google & YouTube from the Shopify App Store and connect your GA4 property (Shopify's only official path since 2025 — complete events, supported)
- For custom mappings, use a Custom Pixel that subscribes to customer events and pushes the dataLayer
- Outbound clicks / scroll / downloads: if you need them, evaluate third-party pixel services — metricsKit does not provide Shopify DOM-based collection
Quick start#
- Add the site in the console (domain only).
- Connect GA4 (measurement ID captured automatically).
- Configure the Google & YouTube app or a Custom Pixel in the Shopify admin (see the GTM guide).
- Place a test order (Bogus Gateway) and verify the purchase event reaches GA4.
- Check ecommerce attribution reports after 24-48 hours.
