Google Search Console (GSC)

Connect GSC for search impressions, clicks, CTR, rankings and URL index inspection.

What GSC gives you#

Once connected, metricsKit pulls your search performance data into the search, realtime and related reports:

  • Query-level impressions, clicks, CTR and average position
  • Page-level search performance and indexed page counts
  • Breakdowns by country and device (mobile / desktop / tablet)
  • URL Inspection: index status and coverage for individual URLs (daily quota per plan)
Note: GSC data lags 1-2 days; same-day search data is never complete on the Google side either.

Prerequisites#

  1. A Google account that has already **verified** this site in Google Search Console (either a domain property or a URL-prefix property).
  2. metricsKit lists the GSC properties visible to your account during authorization; an empty list means the site is not verified in GSC yet.
  3. Check the GSC service during authorization.
Note: GSC uses the webmasters read/write scope rather than read-only — the URL Inspection API requires it. metricsKit only reads data and runs index inspections; it never modifies your site.

How to connect#

  1. Open the console → Data sources (or Settings → Google API) and start the Google authorization.
  2. Approve the requested permissions on the Google consent screen, including Google Search Console.
  3. If exactly one GSC property matches your domain it binds automatically; otherwise pick it in Settings.
  4. When both a domain property and a URL-prefix property match, the domain property wins (broader coverage).
Property typeExampleNotes
Domain propertysc-domain:example.comCovers all subdomains and protocols — recommended
URL-prefix propertyhttps://www.example.com/Covers this prefix only; must match the live domain exactly

Troubleshooting#

  • "Insufficient permission": the bound property is the wrong type or you lack access — rebind the correct property.
  • "No GSC property bound": the site is not verified in GSC, or GSC was not checked during authorization — authorize again from the Google API page.
  • URL Inspection permission errors: users of the old read-only grant need to re-authorize to obtain inspection ability.
Tip: URL Inspection has a daily quota (0 / 50 / 200 by plan) — spend it on your important URLs.
